Decoding Diamond Wire: A Simple Guide to the Precision Cutting Tool
Understand Diamond Wire: Learn about the Mechanics, Applications, Types, and Application Suitability.
What is Diamond Wire?
A Diamond wire serves as the essential component in a diamond wire saw, playing a pivotal role in abrasively cutting a wide range of materials. From hard concrete and steel rebar wires to marble, granite, and various stones, it extends its utility to the tech sector, where it is employed in applications such as silicon chip cutting. The prevalent use of diamond wires is notably prominent in the construction industry, specifically for the precision cutting of concrete.
The wire gets its namesake from the diamond particles encrusted in its beads that perform the cutting function. These beads vary in the amount of diamond content, their diameter, the metals or composite use, the binding process and more. At DeeTec Tools, our beads are manufactured through the Hot Isostatic Pressing (HIP) and Beads Brazing (HBB) process to ensure higher diamond content, even distribution, and better binding.
When is Diamond Wire used?
Diamond wire sawing finds frequent application in challenging or restricted environments, be it due to space limitations, specific dimensions, time constraints, noise considerations, or the operational convenience offered by a wire saw. In construction, diamond wire saws are increasingly prevalent, emerging as the preferred choice among professionals for tasks like concrete and steel cutting. Wire saw is preferred due to its high strength and controlled cutting across most scenarios like masonry, stone, concrete, steel and more. Not only do wire saws produce faster and more efficient results but they also create the least by-product waste, produce the least disturbance be it sound or dust.
How are Diamond Wires made?
The main components of a diamond wire are the diamond beads and the wire assembly itself. The diamond beads are the component that perform the abrasive cutting while the wire keeps the tensions and allows for faster and efficient flow aiding in the cutting process. For the diamond wire to perform clean cutting and have a long product life it is crucial for these two components be of good quality.
The diamond beads being the main abrasing component, are a composite of diamond particles and various metals. The process in which these are bound together makes a whole world of difference when it comes to their life and performance. This can be done through sintering, electroplating or Hot Isostatic Pressing and Brazing. At DeeTec Tools, our beads are made through Hot Isostatic Pressing and Brazing, which results in 2 to 3 times more diamond content when compared to sintered or electroplated beads. The HIP brazing along with our 3D Diamond placement process also allows for a more even diamond spread ensuring better performance for longer periods.
The wire assembly is generally made of metal wire or spring with a rubber or plastic coating on the outside. However, our wires are engineered from a special support spring which allows for the wire to run in demanding conditions and a robust rubber encapsulation. We also employ an industry-leading, bead-lock technology which firmly binds the beads to the wire assembly restraining them from rotating or displacing when in operation resulting in faster and more precise cutting and a superior product life. Our robust assembly provides for lesser chance of wire breakage and is therefore extremely safe in all kind of applications.
What are the different types of diamond wire?
As we have established, diamond wires can be used for a wide array of applications and are thus made for specific purposes. A diamond wire made for stone cutting applications will not provide the best results for construction applications like concrete or steel cutting. The wire differs in their diamond content, diameter, outer coating components, inner wire assembly and more. When selecting a diamond wire, it is key to ensure that it is suitable and the right choice for your particular applications. If you are not sure which wire is right for you and in which configuration, you can contact us for a consultation at sales@deetectools.com.
What are the advantages of using a Diamond wire?
There are several key benefits of using a diamond wire over other cutting tools such as a circular saw, hammers, or a reciprocating saw. The major one being that the diamond wire uses abrasion rather than teeth saw to cut. Diamond wire also provide the most precise cut and can operate in tight space. They produce the least by-product waste when compared to other methods and are also relatively fumeless and quiet, with little to no vibrations. More importantly, the cutting speed is far superior.
How does a diamond wire cut?
A diamond wire is placed around or through a bore hole to precision cut the concrete. Abrasion action is used to cut through the concrete as the wire is run at high speed to perform the sawing motion. This method can produce a lot of heat due to the friction and thus requires cooling. Typically, a constant flow of water is provided to cool the wire or a specialized coolants can also be used.
What are the applications of diamond wire?
Diamond wire sawing has a wide range of applications. For construction applications, it is widely used for heavy reinforced concreted cutting and steel. Some applications of diamond wire include:
-
Controlled demolitions
-
Dismantling or removal of large steel structures
-
Performing angular cuts or cuts in dimensional constraints
-
Preferred choice for sawing heavy reinforced concrete in bridges, walls, factories, columns or beams
